Why subscribe?

I am Fred Smullin, and I welcome you to “Introspective Times.” I’m a former lay pastor who led a small rural community church until its closing in 2022. Introspective Times was a snail mail newsletter to the congregation and their friends. Now, I produce it digitally here on Substack.

It took me nearly sixty-three years to understand that my experiences and spiritual journey are those of a mystic. What is a mystic? Richard Rohr defines it best, “A mystic is simply one who has moved from mere belief or belonging systems to an actual inner experience of God.“

I had accumulated mystical experiences since my pre-teen years, but I never knew what they truly were until my heart reawakened to Christ at age forty-eight. It would take me another fifteen years to become aware that I fit the definition of a mystic.

I invite you to embark on a journey of introspection and spiritual growth. My mystic background leads me to see things in their wholeness, connection, and union, not only their particularity. There I delve into the rich tapestry of allegorical narratives inspired by discipleship with Jesus, shaped by my journey from an agnostic to a disciple and then the pulpit as a lay minister.

Through allegories that mirror the challenges and triumphs of contemporary life, I attempt to explore the universal themes of faith, compassion, forgiveness, and personal transformation. Each “Introspective Times” issue presents thought-provoking stories that resonate deeply, inviting you to reflect on your spiritual journey and forge a deeper connection with your faith.

When you subscribe, you gain access to a sanctuary of introspection, where I pray my insightful commentary and reflections provide guidance and understanding. Join a vibrant community of seekers, engaging in conversations that inspire and enlighten.

Subscribe to “Introspective Times” and unlock the transformative power of the mystery of spiritual journey and maturation. Together, let’s navigate the depths of discipleship, embracing the wisdom hidden within the allegorical tales and embarking on personal growth and spiritual enlightenment.
